Chinese Discrimination
As a person who could enjoy a good laugh, I don’t really care about discrimination against people similar to me (to a degree as just making jokes is okay as it is all for the laugh, however getting beaten for the type of person you identify as will anger me) so I have heard my fair share of stereotypes. I would be focusing on the stereotypes of a Chinese individual. I heard many jokes about Chinese individuals like how they have tightly small eyes, about small body proportions, consumption of any animal (it is negative because many places that at eating their own pets), strict parents, poor communication, and being unable to identify with common trends like video games. Even the positive aspect of are negative as people expect us to be higher in the academic studies, people expect us to apologize after any event, and people expect us to be able to fix a computer. Stereotypes aren’t always harmful or should I say they aren’t meant to harm others often.
Stereotypes are built under the foundation that information can be filled if two pieces of information are similar. What better platform can abuse this thought process better than media. It has always been out their form propaganda to twitter posts. Our brains automatically associate the information as true because we don’t know any better. Media has portrayed many Asian stereotypes in a strange light as there are many different Asian cultures that are very similar therefore it is most lumped together as there is a lot of information, for example all Asians are ninjas but, that is only Japanese. Our jobs as a misunderstood type of culture is to explain these misconceptions when they portray us from a very different perspective than our own.
In general, we should understand that stereotypes can be far from the truth and we should judge others on these stereotypes as it could offend them or create a negative perspective on the people, thus we must explain who we are if someone is just assumes who we are. I have a different ideology and that is we should save them the trouble of being embarrassed and just laugh about it if we can.
